It’s always heartening to see a new Jacob & Co. offering that sports the company’s Astronomia caliber. The entries in the series are always fascinating; colorful and attractive examples of the mechanical involute. From a Monopoly-themed model (Alec) to the Maestro Worldtime stunt, each one is worth their weight in gold, and more.
The newest in the series, the Astronomia Solar Bitcoin, is worth virtual gold. The watch taps into the cashola zeitgeist – cryptocurrency – and can only be purchased with digital dollars. Its singular design places the sun, earth, and moon in sympathetic rotation, but renders them in terms of financial value; the sun is a yellow sapphire, landmasses are gold against black oceans, and the moon is a one-carat diamond.
The case of the Astronomia Solar Bitcoin is made of titanium, but it has been treated with a diamond-like carbon coating that presents it as jet black. A black alligator strap with a buckle also treated with DLC completes the watch. Priced at $348,000.
